Mark G. Curry
Heralded as one of the funniest comedians who has left an indelible mark on the comedy scene, Mark Curry, a comedian, has had an impressive journey through the world of comedy and entertainment. Born on June 1 in Oakland, California, Curry, the youngest child of his eight siblings, began his career in stand-up comedy, eventually gaining recognition for his unique style and sharp wit. Curry launched his comedy career in 1982.
One of Entertainment Tonight’s Iconic Leading Men of the 90’s, Curry quickly matriculated into notoriety and opened for many greats including Ray Charles, Richard Pryor, Whitney Houston, just to name a few.
An aspiring comedian, Curry had two HBO specials. One of Curry’s stand-up acts was featured on HBO’s One Night Stand which was the beginning of the launch of Curry’s television career.
Curry’s breakthrough came in the 1990s with his role as the lovable and entertaining teacher Mr. Cooper on the ABC sitcom Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper. The syndicated show, which aired from 1992 to 1997, showcased Curry’s incredible comedic talent and warmed the hearts of families across the world. Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper became an international household name. Curry was so beloved across all generations in his role that he received a Student Choice Awards in 1993. The following year he was named one of TV Guide’s 10 “best-loved stars” on television.
Curry also worked with the legendary Dick Clark for two New Years Eve specials.
Additionally, Curry was the host at the Showtime at the Apollo for five years and was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Between 1994-1997, Curry guest served as a host on Soul Train and MadTV, among several other shows. Curry was also a guest on Hopes for the Holidays, a TV special with Bob Hope and Mark Harry.
In addition to his work on television, Curry has appeared in numerous films. Some films include Switchback and Armageddon, among several other movies. Prior to his acting career taking off, Curry honed his skills as a respected stand-up comedian, performing in all clubs across the country. His quick wit and relatable humor resonated with audiences, earning him a dedicated fan base.
Curry was the host of Comedy Central’s Don’t Forget Your Toothbrush in 2000 and had six episodes on The Drew Carey Show as Drew’s boss. Curry’s love for animals led to him hosting the show called Animal Tales. Shortly after, he was also featured on Def Comedy Jam. Later in 2012, Curry joined Nick At Nite’s first-ever original live-action family comedy series, See Dad Run.
Many who have attended Curry’s stand-up comedy performances have deemed Curry as being hysterical in his craft. Curry recently wrapped up a 50-city tour with Katt Williams. Curry remains a beloved icon in the world of comedy.
